Information about G Suite for Education

Staff and students at the Ottawa Catholic School Board use a variety of technologies to support teaching and learning. This includes Google’s G Suite for Education (formerly Google Apps for Education) and the Chrome browser to enhance the way we access and create digital content and share information within and beyond our school community.

Essentially, G Suite is a cloud-based learning platform that allows teachers and students to create, share and collaborate on a range of documents online. With an Office-like productivity suite, students and staff can create slide decks, spreadsheets, drawings and websites, communicate using email and video conferences, and stay organized with shared calendars and various apps that personalize their digital workspace. All of these tools and files can be  accessed at home and school on any device, using their G Suite login.

Our school board owns the @ocsbstudent.ca domain and all OCSB students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 have an email address associated with their name for use during their time with us as students. OCSB retains ownership of all data. Google does not sell the data to third parties, and all of the core services are free of advertisements. Facts about G Suite for Education

  • G Suite is used by many of the world’s leading educational institutions, including universities, secondary and elementary schools. Many school boards across Ontario and North America use G Suite.

  • Many G Suite apps such as Google Docs and Gmail are already familiar to students and parents.

How will G Suite for Education enhance my child’s learning opportunities?

  • G Suite works on any device. This allows our students to continue learning beyond the classroom and the ability to access their content at any time.

  • Students and teachers can work together, sharing calendars, collaborating on documents and providing just-in-time feedback to improve student learning.

  • Students will develop skills that will prepare them to communicate and collaborate effectively in an increasingly complex digital world of work.

What should I be aware of?

  • G Suite allows students to communicate and store information in both public and private spaces online.

  • G Suite acknowledges its users as the owners of content they produce and store.

  • G Suite does not share any data or user information with any other party, unlike other Google products outside of the @ocsbstudent.ca domain, such as @gmail.com accounts.

  • Your child will be provided an email address within the @ocsbstudent.ca domain. Students in Kindergarten to Grade six can only email others within the school board, unless otherwise requested by their teacher.

  • Basic G Suite terms of service can be read here, but the school board has a stronger agreement through the ministry of education. http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en-GB/terms/education_terms.html
