Dear Parents/Guardians:

We hope you are all well and healthy as we continue to deal with the COVID-19 situation world wide.

Our focus this week continues to be the wellness of our staff and students. Wellness for many of us has come from getting to see each other via virtual communication, photos and tweets. Staff have gathered virtually and have shared some inspiring moments. We miss going to school everyday and we REALLY miss seeing everyone's smiling faces. Please share that with your sons and daughters. We understand you have your child’s continued success on your mind - teachers will continue to plan for student learning and share this with you. As your family works through the scheduling of the day, please be sure to include some downtime! Schedule a recess break outside or some DPA (daily physical activity) to keep your minds clear and your bodies healthy.

Some of you are frontline workers/essential services and your well-being is very important to us all.   Please accept our gratitude for everything that you do. We are here to support you in every way we can. We know many of you are caring for family members while balancing working from home.  It is not easy and it is so important for you to know that our school family/community is here for you. Should your family have any needs please communicate it to us through our cecilia@ocsb.ca email.

Our building may be closed, but our school community is working hard. This past week the educators have been using various methods of communications to touch base with all our families. Our focus has been to connect, check in and provide ideas/opportunities to explore learning at home. Please note the learning opportunities during this phase are not mandatory, but are meant to support students at home during this time of distance learning. For more activities, visit our school website, the classroom teachers’ websites/blogs/twitter feeds or the new website from the School Board where you will find a curated collection of educational resources #ocsbAtHome Learning Resources for your child to supplement the Ministry of Education’s Learn at Home website. These resources are designed to assist only.  We would also like you to know that our school parking lot can be used to access the school wifi for internet access.

At this time, as we are under a state of emergency, only those deemed essential services should be leaving their homes. While many wish to retrieve personal belongings from the school, everyone is doing their part to slow down COVID-19 by staying home. Our school will be developing a plan to support your child’s needs that may include both digital and non-digital resources. Unfortunately, until we can access the schools safely, we are not yet in a position to distribute existing devices to students. We are working on a distribution plan so that devices can be redistributed to students once we get approval from Ottawa Public Health.

This situation is fluid and we certainly do not have all the answers to some pressing questions that parents may have. We appreciate your patience as we work with our educators to provide the best resources possible. As you have likely heard, the Minister of Education has indicated that we will not reopen on April 6th. We expect an official announcement this week regarding the extension of school closures. We are preparing for the continuation of learning for our students, knowing that circumstances are different for each individual child. We understand the need to have work and structure but we certainly do not expect parents to recreate school in your living room. Please spend time with your family. Hug them and let them know things will get better. As this week comes to an end, so will Phase 1 of distance learning. Phase 2 will bring additional questions and concerns and as we learn more from the Minister of Education, we will communicate that information to you.

Stay safe! Stay home! Stay healthy!
