PGL Students from St Cecilia win International Award!

posted Mar 12, 2021, 1:12 PM by Kathryn McCallum
Two of St Cecilia's Grade 6 PGL students are part of a winning team of inventors. Their portable CT scanner has won the regional round (our region is large--all of Canada and the northernmost US states) in the ExploraVision Contest sponsored by NSTA and Toshiba. The announcement will be made official today!

This is big! Out of all of North America theirs was ranked among the top 24 inventions. They each have won a Chromebook as a result of their win and will go on to a National Championship in June.

Here is the write up about what they invented:

Two-thirds of the planet does not have access to basic radiology services. Computed Tomography Scanners take up a lot of room and are not portable. The CT-Scan-To-Go is a portable battery operated scanner that would fit into a suitcase. Attached to a helmet, CT-Scan-To-Go operates two robotic arms that circulate around the patient’s body. Each arm equipped with an x-ray transmitter and receiver generates small scans that are pieced together like a puzzle on a computer terminal.
