Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving weekend. We are so thankful for the support you have given the school. We wanted to share the most up to date information from Ottawa Public Health (OPH). The OPH covid screening tool has changed and we wanted to make sure all our families were aware. OPH information will be found at the end of this letter.

A few items of note for this month:

  1. School photos have been postponed until the spring in the hopes that we will be able to take class photos and individual photos as we normally would. For the fall, it was not feasible to do so.

  2. As the weather begins to change, we know that some of our students will be coming to school in rubber boots and soon, it will be winter boots. When your child wears boots to school, please send a pair of labeled indoor shoes in their backpack. For their safety, students cannot be in sock feet. Students also need indoor shoes to participate in gym. Staff will review the process with the children about where to place their outdoor boots and how to look after their indoor shoes.

  3. We are nearing the end of the 'Progress Report' term.  Progress Reports will be shared with parents in November. After the progress reports go home, we will be conducting virtual parent-teacher interviews. More details will follow towards the end of October.

  4. Our traditional meet the educator evening could not take place this fall, so the teachers have all prepared something for their families to replace it. Some prepared videos, some prepared google meets; if you have not received anything yet, you will shortly.

  5. The School Board will soon be gathering information from parents with regards to the Virtual Program and In-Person Learning. If you wish to change from In-Person to VIRTUAL, please send an email to cecilia@ocsb.ca by midnight on Friday night, October 16th to be added to the VIRTUAL waitlist.

  6. We will not be hosting our Halloween Dance a thon this year. So disappointing for us all. Information with regards to Halloween at school will be sent to parents later in October.

Information from Ottawa Public Health

The provincial guidelines related to COVID-19 screening were modified on October 1st. Ottawa Public Health has updated their screening tool to be consistent with the changes, while maintaining the guidance that is specific to Ottawa for isolation. The tool can be found on the OPH website: Ottawa Public Health School Screening Tool

For absences related to Covid symptoms, please contact the school office through email cecilia@ocsb.ca or by phone 613-692-6164.  We ask that you do not inform/email teachers directly regarding the reason for your child’s absence for privacy reasons.  We will be pleased to go through the screening tool with you by phone if you are unsure of what to do.

Briefly, the changes are that the symptoms have been tiered.

  • First tier symptoms require a test (in almost all cases).  Household contacts must also isolate at home until test results are received.

  • Second tier cases require a minimum of 24 hours at home from when the symptom(s) started.  Household contacts (siblings) must also isolate at home for at least 24 hours while monitoring your child’s symptom(s).  If the symptom is improving and your child does not have a fever during the first 24 hours, your child may return to school/childcare when they feel well enough to do so. Please note that any time a child’s symptoms include vomiting or diarrhea, then the child has to be well for 48 hours before returning. A negative COVID-19 test is not required to return. Household contacts who are symptom-free can also end their self-isolation.

Thank you for all that you do to keep our St. Cecilia families safe!
